Lying for Dummies

Lying is an excellent skill to master. Not only can it serve you in less than moral ways, but it can be pretty funny.

Unfortunately, most people just can't pull off a persuasive non-truth. So, I've created a comprehensive guide to becoming a good liar, in three simple steps! Here are the three keys to pulling off a convincing lie (for comical purposes, anyways):

  • Don't laugh. An easy to way to train yourself is to force yourself to watch something funny over and over again until you just don't laugh. Find something else, preferably with a different kind of humor; rinse, lather, repeat. This is actually a specialized version of "hide your tell". If something other than your giggle box is what gives you away, figure out what it is and take steps to stifle it.

  • Know how you talk naturally. This one is very important; if you don't know yourself, you can't emulate yourself, and if you can't emulate your personality, nobody's gonna believe it when you try.

  • Sound like you know what you're talking about, or like you have no clue. Be either vague when you're leading up to your lie, and continue, or be very specific with it. If you appear to know what you're talking about, then the person is more likely to believe you. It's a big help, especially if the other person has no clue. And if you're vague, then it will come across as you trying to not to sound dumb, which is okay because you just don't want to seem like you're lying. Besides, nobody expects you to pretend to pretend to be smart, do they?
