Why don't we flush with our feet?

Pedal-operated toilets exist, and they don't seem terribly complicated (after all, we already have foot-operated trash cans), but according to this Slate article, "high installation costs" have prevented their widespread adoption. Besides being more convenient than the laser-powered auto-flushing toilets that the story rants about, surely these are cheaper as well?

P.S.: I sincerely hope that no one has ever attempted to brand that product "The Pedopotty".
